Suswan back, dreams big with Plateau United

Reigning Nigeria Professional Football League champions Plateau United have started the new season like a house on fire and have left no one in doubt that their performances last season wasn't a flash int he pan.

The Jos side has picked up maximum points from two games so far and even though it is early days, they have shown they mean business this term.

A 1-0 win over Nasarawa United was followed up by an impressive 2-0 win over Rivers United in Jos where Plateau put up a show to easily see off the visitors.

One man who has been ever present in Plateau’s strong start to the season is newly signed right back Terna Suswan.

The 26-year-old has returned back to the Nigeria Professional Football League after a six-year absence and has been putting in a decent shift as he has been ever present in the two games so far.

Suswan has played in Portugal, Malta, Albania and Poland before deciding to return home and pitch tent with the league champions.

The former Flying Eagles defender told npfl.ng that he is back home to prove he still has it as well as show other Nigerian players that they can come home and continue their career if they so wish.

“It was an easy decision to come back home from Europe and play in the Nigeria Professional Football League,” he revealed.

“A lot has improved thanks to the League Management Company which was also the factor for me. Instead of wasting time abroad waiting for offers, I decided to come back home and play before I get another opening.

“I agree the systems are different but the lure of playing for the league champions as well as what I’ve seen and heard about the improvements in the league made me make up my mind to head back to Nigeria from Poland.

“There are a few challenges here and there but the league has improved a lot since I left to go play abroad.

“I wish other Nigerian players who are idle or have finished their contracts can come back and play in the league. I will advise them to try it out even though the ultimate decision lies with them. 

For me, I have no qualms coming back. None at all.” the defender added.

Suswan has played in all of Plateau United’s games this season (vs Nasarawa United and Rivers United) helping his side to grab six points from a possible six.

With a lot of attention on the team and the CAF Champions League on the horizon, the former FK Kukesi defender believes his team will do well both in the league and on the continent.

The defender reckons with his experience and the calibre of players in the team, Plateau United are capable of ruffling a few feathers in the NPFL and the CAF Champions League.

“We have a strong unit, players who want to fight for each other. I believe we will shock a few people who have written us off,” Suswan enthused.

“The winning mentality is already with the team and we have some very good players in our squad. We also have experienced players who will complement the young ones. Hopefully, I will also bring my experience to bear to help the team.

“I know a lot of people don’t rate us but we are going to surprise a lot this season. We want to defend our title and go as far as we can in the Champions League.

“It will not be easy but we are determined to go out there and make our fans happy. Plateau United will shock a few people this season and I’m hoping my return back home will be rewarded with a title,” he added.
